In 1978, The City of Fayetteville decided to utilize the Downtown Square for a public park and plaza area. With that, the Downtown Square Gardens were born. Every year, thousands of residents enjoy the gardens and plants around the historic Old Post Office, in addition to the countless local businesses that surround the square.

Dickson Street Bookshop was founded by Donald Choffel and Charles O’Donnell in 1978. They have over 100,000 used and out of print books on every subject imaginable, and they shelve several hundred new books each week so there are always new titles to browse.
